As you know by now my name is Adelston , if you’ve clicked on the about me tab I see that you have some curiosities about me. To give you some background info on me I’m from Dallas Texas , I’m a passionate foodie. Growing up with a chef as a father will definitely enhance you flavor pallet. I like to think of myself as a good cook as well. I played basketball my first 3 years of high school 2 of them being on varsity. I quit my senior year cause my love of the game or desire to play was lost, I was in the midst of finding a new love. The love I end up finding was reading! I look forward to telling you all about my journey to how I found what I loved to do the most.
Here’s some of my interests
-I love the sport of basketball, quitting in high school didn’t erase my love for the game. I still spend time on getting better at the sport even though I know I’ll never make the nba. But when you love something you give it the time it deserves and I give basketball of good portion of my time. Rather is be playing or watching.
I’m a movie nerd. I love all types of film, from silent to foreign, to old classics. The oldest film I’ve seen was birth of a nation which released in 1915, I have a stronger love for older films simply because I believe the acting and writing was better than today’s films. I’m a fan of classics and non classics, from gone with the wind, casablanca, cool hand luke, guess who’s coming to dinner. To movies such as the waterboy, caddyshack, and other goofy films. Movies to me are the only forms of life’s true experience in physical form. I analyze films in ways to find not just meaning in my life but the overall meanings of life in general. I could go all day and night talking about movies , my knowledge of film also gives me an edge in creating relationships with people of all ages, it’s not only a hobby or interest but for me its been a life skill.
The same love I have for film , I share that with music. Everyone loves to say they listen to everything and anything but they don’t. I brag about having over 14,000 songs in my spotify library lol. I have songs and genres from early WW1 and 2 , to motown, du bop, swing era, big jazz bands, rock, rock n roll, classic rock, metal, heavy metal, and the list goes on. Music to me is another form of life’s experiences being told from someone else. Music to is something else I analyze, there’s so much interpretation that the thoughts are sometimes endless. Like movies music is a conversation starter for me, because odds are no matter ethnic group you belong to, we’ll bond over some brand of music which to me is beautiful. I’ve so many relationships just off music alone.
My story
Aside from my interest its best I tell you how I fell in love with reading and critically thinking. It started in 8th grade when my english teacher/basketball coach offered the class a set of books he claimed helped him find the answers in life and that if anyone was interested in reading them to just ask him. Well I stayed after class expressed my interest and instead of starting me off with the books he presented in class he gave me a book called the “tao of pooh”. That book in changed my life. It explained Taoist philosophy through Winnie the pooh characters. That book made life look so much clearer that I had so many more questions. For context purposes I have to include the manner in which my teacher got me to critically think. He made us watch twilight zones and gave us questions to answer about every episode but the questions where questions that were only right or wrong based off how well you could defend your answer. So since 13 I have been analyzing every aspect of life and looking to define what made sense to me, that’s when my love for critical thinking began.
He suggested I read a book called ten philosophical mistakes by mortimer adler and that book really got the wheels going. The chapters of the book included subjects such as, words and meaning, moral values, freedom of choice, the intellect and its senses. The content in that book took me down a rabbit whole of curiosity. If I wanted to understand words and meaning I had to look up linguists such as noam chomsky, freedom of choice got me interested in black writers such as james baldwin. The list goes on. After 8th grade from 2015 to now I’ve constantly been reading and learning about a plethora of subjects and ideas. I’ve been told that due to my ability to critically think and being knowledgeable in a lot of areas that I should express these ideas. I am by no means an intellectual, I am someone who likes to think and engage in conversation with others. If you are someone who likes to think or be presented with different ideas I think this is the place for you.
My personal library
There’s plenty more that I have read that remain on audio book lol.
